Our community activities

As we invest in communities, we pursue long-term projects with strategic goals that are aligned with global and social priorities as well as our business strengths. We seek to have a more meaningful impact by focusing the majority of our spending on significant challenges in the regions where we operate. Find examples of some of our projects in Europe below:

Germany

Since 2008, ExxonMobil has been evaluating unconventional gas production possibilities in the Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia areas of Germany. As part of a transparent engagement initiative, we developed a mobile information booth called “Info-Mobil.” The Info-Mobil traveled across northern Germany to make appearances in key community locations. ExxonMobil employees who travel with the booth inform interested citizens about the specific projects in those communities, explain the role of natural gas in the future energy mix and answer questions. Read more

One of the many ways ExxonMobil prioritizes the preservation of our natural resources is by supporting environmental protection and community engagement projects. In 2012, ExxonMobil contributed more than US $65,000 to a 4.5-hectare nature reserve on Tiengemeten. Most of the contribution went to support a recreational area for children, but the park also includes a picnic area, playhouse and beach area. The island provides a breeding ground for nearly 100 species of birds. Read more

Norway

To cultivate greater student interest in geology and geoscience in Norway, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Norway AS (ENAS) has partnered with the St. Olav Upper Secondary School in Stavanger since 2008. The school is one of the few in Norway to offer a geology and geoscience curriculum to interested students. ExxonMobil employee volunteers visit classrooms to mentor students and share seismic data, well logs and core data. Read more

Romania

In continued partnership with the University of Bucharest, the ExxonMobil Romania venture office recently sponsored field safety training for more than 80 geoscience students. The day-long training consisted of two sessions, with Upstream Research Company (URC) field safety experts leading one session, and a local medical service provider guiding students in first aid training. Read more

On Sakhalin Island, Russia, where ExxonMobil affiliate Exxon Neftegas Limited (ENL) develops oil and gas on behalf of the international Sakhalin-1 Consortium, the outflow of young people to the mainland to receive higher education creates a talent gap, as few graduates return to their home land. To address this issue, ENL is supporting higher education on the island through a partnership with Sakhalin State University (SSU), in addition to investing in large-scale educational programs. Since 2001, ENL has contributed more than US $15 million to various educational projects, expanding educational opportunities to the local communities of Sakhalin. Read more

United Kingdom

For the eighth consecutive year, ExxonMobil provided U.K. employees with a chance to participate in a “Day of Caring,” which enables employees to spend a workday volunteering their services with local projects. For example, employees from ExxonMobil’s Newport facility converted a nearby primary school classroom into a kitchen so students could have cooking lessons. Read more
