ExxonMobil in the Benelux supports the C3 Foundation, which promotes chemistry, math and science, technical professions, life sciences and process engineering among youth. ExxonMobil organizes an C3 ‘children’s lab’ during the annual “Jeugstad” (Youth Town) event near Rotterdam, where children aged 6 - 12 can take part in numerous chemistry-based activities under the guidance of ExxonMobil volunteers.
Each April, ExxonMobil organizes a ‘Girlsday’ at one of its Rotterdam plants. A national initiative founded by VHTO, the Dutch national expert organization on girls/women and science/technology, Girlsday seeks to encourage girls to become familiar with science, technology and ICT from a young age. In April 2014, the integrated refinery and chemical Botlek site in Rotterdam welcomed almost 40 high school students – all daughters of site employees. The girls toured the premises, had the opportunity to operate the furnace in the simulator room of the Aromatics Plant, and took part in numerous experiments.
ExxonMobil in Benelux also supports projects and exhibitions featuring refining and chemicals in education centers at the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, which are visited by thousands of students each year. Find out more about the Rotterdam project here and the Antwerp initiative here.
The ExxonMobil Link Schools program reaches out to about 35 schools around key operating locations in the UK. This is delivered by organizations including Learning through Landscapes (LTL), which encourages schools to look at the potential their school grounds have for learning and enjoyment, and CREATE (Centre for Research, Education And Training in Energy), which is using its experience and expertise to help shape the program and to offer schools a package of support including advice, materials and resources.
ExxonMobil in the UK has also worked with the Energy Institute to develop a Virtual Refinery Tour. This allows school pupils – and adults – to visit the Esso refinery at Fawley from their computer screens.
Around 50 employees who are governors of their local schools further strengthen our school links. Employees and their family members are encouraged to become governors or members of parent councils and can claim annual grants to benefit their school.
ExxonMobil in Germany supports several educational and career advancement programs..
The “IdeenExpo” (Ideas Expo) is Germany’s largest youth event for science and technology. In partnership with the government and economy of Lower Saxony, ExxonMobil in Germany offers young visitors to opportunity to touch and experience technology and to look at science from a completely new perspective. Not enough students are interested in a career in engineering. To address this issue, ExxonMobil in Germany participates in the global #BeAnEngineer campaign, and seeks to encourage and prepare students to pursue this important and fulfilling career path. They support the program “Formel 1 in der Schule” (Formula 1 at school), which is a multi-disciplinary, international technology competition. Students between the ages of 11-19 develop a miniature Formula 1 car on their computer and then test it in a race. Read more here.
In the summer of 2007, ExxonMobil in Germany launched a model school cooperation project to help inspire young people to learn more about science and technology. In the framework of this pilot project, ExxonMobil Production Germany cooperates with the high school in Sulingen to teach grade 12 students about a range of topics related to natural gas production. ExxonMobil Production Germany offers the students visits to operational sites, internship positions for students and teachers, active participation by ExxonMobil employees in the project as well as financial support for material and equipment. ExxonMobil in France actively participates in the organization of the “Olympiades des Sciences de l’Ingénieur” (Engineering Science Olympics), which helps students develop a sense of initiative, engineering skills, and a taste for science. The goal of these Olympiades is to assess and award experimental projects in engineering sciences that the high school students carry out over a period of several months. In so doing, students gain technical expertise and public speaking skills through presenting the project to the examination board. Forty-seven teams from ten schools in Normandy participated in 2016.
Esso France also develops sponsorship programs to support young students’ interest in math and science and to encourage them to consider careers in scientific fields. In this context, Esso France supports the Rallye Mathématiques sans Frontières – a cultural and scientific association offering teenagers the opportunity to discuss mathematics outside classes and lectures with the aim of helping students develop experimental, reasoning, innovation and critical analysis skills. This annual program has thus far involved over 430 classes, 50 schools and engaged more than 18,000 students in the Marseille Area.
In addition to participating in the Sci-Tech Challenge, ExxonMobil in Norway has a geoscience cooperation with St. Olav upper secondary school in Stavanger. Geoscientists from our company have contributed to the creation of an educational program partly based on authentic data from one of the company’s fields in the North Sea. The pupils work on a project, which is later presented to ExxonMobil professionals. The best team receives an award.
Esso Italiana has a longstanding commitment to improving energy literacy among students. In 2015, in cooperation with De Agostini Libri, a leading publishing company, Esso Italiana updated the “Energy Atlas” with new content. Originally published in 2009, the Atlas is designed to give schools a new tool to help introduce high school students to the world of energy and to understand its importance for our progress. The Atlas provides a scientifically rigorous framework of key items related to the world of energy, and offers an interdisciplinary approach to the topics through comprehensive iconography, graphics, charts and cues for searches and maps that guide students to consider energy in an integrated way.
Motivating students to understand energy challenges is important for their development and for their future contribution to society. This is why the “Energy Atlas” – produced both in printed and DVD versions – is distributed to schools close to ExxonMobil group operating plants in Italy as part of the Sci-Tech Challenge program.
