Air emissions

In accordance with regulatory requirements and our commitment to maintaining operational excellence, we work to reduce air emissions associated with our operations and the products we deliver. ExxonMobil’s combined emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have decreased by almost 40 percent over the past 10 years across all of our businesses.

Our approach

We seek opportunities to reduce the air emissions associated with our operations and the products we deliver to increase shareholder value and meet regulatory requirements.

Up Close: Reducing emissions at the Beaumont refinery

In 2016, ExxonMobil began installation of a SCANfining unit at our Beaumont refinery in Texas. This technology uses a proprietary catalyst system to remove sulfur while minimizing octane loss to produce ultra-low sulfur fuels. SCANfining is expected to start up in 2018 and will increase production of ultra-low sulfur fuels by approximately 40,000 barrels per day, further strengthening our integrated Downstream portfolio while meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 gasoline sulfur specifications.

Performance and initiatives

In 2016, our combined emissions totaled less than 0.4 million metric tons. For historic data on ExxonMobil’s air emissions, please see the performance data table.
