Gas infrastructure

Europe's potential to diversify its natural gas supplies is enabled by its established and growing infrastructure.

Two key factors in particular play a critical role:

Europe's vast internal gas distribution infrastructure with over 200,000 kilometers of transmission pipelines extending across the continent and several thousands of kilometers of distribution pipelines, interconnections and extensions being built or planned, to ensure a reliable security of supply.

A large-capacity European transportation network that reaches neighboring supply regions so that Europe can receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) by tanker. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), in 2015 Europe had a regasification capacity of 208 bcm/year, a figure which is predicted to rise to 400 bcm/year by 2025.
